"Not impressed": Advert for Ireland holiday uses Scottish castle

Updated

A competition website promoting a free holiday to Ireland has angered Scots and officials at a castle in the Scottish Highlands after using the wrong photo.

Womensfreebies.co.uk advertised the £2,000 luxury holiday to Ireland on its Facebook page, along with an image of Eilean Donan Castle in Dornie.

Its Facebook fans were quick to notice the blunder, with one saying: "Need a History lesson !!!;insult to Eilean Donan;beautiful part of SCOTLAND. !!! Love Ireland ,visit every year,PLEASE do both countries justice".

Another wrote: "If you wish to see this castle go to Scotland".

But Eilean Donan Castle itself spotted the mistake and said: "We are NOT impressed at all!!!"

In another comment, the popular tourist attraction wrote: "Somebody somewhere REALLY needs a Geography lesson! And fast!!! LOL".

The Eilean Donan Castle website describes the landmark as 'one of the most iconic images of Scotland' and a place 'recognised all around the world'.

Set on an island where three sea lochs meet, it is surrounded by majestic scenery and is one of the most important attractions in the Scottish Highlands.

In January, bosses at VisitBritain were left red-faced after their website promoted £45 day trips from Cardiff to the Brecon Beacons with an image of Ashness Bridge in Cumbria.

The advert read: "Tour stops include Brecon Beacons National Park - see the stunning lakes, waterfalls and peaks of this world famous site."

Greg Stephenson, Cumbria Tourism's PR Manager, said: "It's flattering that VisitBritain have used Surprise View, Ashness Bridge, to portray the Welsh countryside, after all the Lake District's offering is the best in the world.
