Actress Lupita Nyong'o's £97,000 pearl Oscars dress has been returned to the Hollywood hotel where it was stolen, TMZ reports.

The celebrity magazine says it was called by the thief who told them where they could find it and who added that the pearls are fake.

Nyong'o's dress was returned to The London West Hollywood inside a garment bag wrapped in a bin liner.

According to TMZ, the man said he stole the $150,000 dress after noticing the hotel room door ajar. After removing two pearls and taking them to Los Angeles' garment district, he found out they were not real.

Police retrieved the dress from the hotel after they were alerted by TMZ.

Michael White of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department told the BBC: "Whether the jewels on the dress are fake or real... we still have a burglary and we still have a grand theft."

Lupita's Calvin Klein dress was reportedly covered in 6,000 natural pearls.

At the Oscars, the 31-year-old said: "We talked about it being fluid and liquid. I wanted it to be an homage to the sea."

Detectives are now working to establish if the dress is the same one stolen from Lupita's hotel room.
