The world's best beach has been revealed as Baia do Sancho in Brazil's Fernando de Noronha archipelago.

This relatively unknown spot has been crowned top spot by TripAdvisor. With crystal clear water in different shades and towering cliffs full of green, it's not hard to see why travellers rated its beautiful sands the best in the world.

One reviewer said of the 2015 Travellers' Choice winner: "As you walk through a small trail, you can't imagine what awaits you. The heavenly view seems like a mirage."

As well as its towering cliffs being a haven for a multitude of exotic wildlife, Baia do Sancho is an excellent diving destination.

Simon Williams, director of Brazil holidays specialist Bespoke Brazil, told AOL Travel: "This comes as no surprise to us as Fernando de Noronha is one of the most beautiful places in the world. That sounds like a big statement but it is hard for anyone to disagree. It's a picture perfect archipelago of 21 islands, with deserted beaches and some of the best diving on the planet.

"The islands are 340 kilometres off the Brazilian mainland and accessed by flights from Recife and Natal. The infrequency of these flights means that visitor numbers are controlled so the island never feels overcrowded."

Williams added: "The islands and the waters that surround the archipelago form part of Brazil's first national marine park and all visitors are required to pay a daily environmental tax as part of their visit. The environment and ecology play an important role on the island and buildings are strictly regulated to make sure that this amazing area is protected. If you are looking for paradise, look no further."

While far-flung Baia do Sancho celebrated a world win, the UK didn't miss out and Devon's Woolacombe Beach was named the best in Britain, fourth best in Europe and the 13th best beach in the world.
