The reasonably mild weather enjoyed in many parts of the UK over the last few days is set to give way to more snow, freezing temperatures and 80mph gales, warn experts.

Leon Brown, meteorologist at The Weather Channel, told Aol Travel the weather is set to turn on Thursday or Friday, before going "rapidly downhill on Sunday".

Next week is likely to see a return of the snow, which could be the first of a number of "Arctic plunges" going through to March.

He said: "There'll be another touch of frost for southern England on Tuesday night and dry and sunny on Wednesday.

"Not so for the north with rain over North Scotland on Tuesday night and becoming windy. There'll be heavy rain on Wednesday evening over West Scotland and strong to gale-force south west winds with gusts over 60mph over exposed coasts and hills. There's strong winds too on Wednesday night across northern England with gusts over 50mph.

"Make the most of the fine weather in the south as Thursday will become wet over central and southern Britain while the north turns colder and clearer, but with some wintry showers.

"More rain will spread across the south on Friday, especially in the afternoon and evening. The north will remain colder and clearer, but quite a few wintry showers over the west of Scotland with hail and sleet at lower levels and snow for the mountains.

"Saturday looks by far the best day of the weekend with scattered wintry showers but also plenty of late winter sunshine. It will feel cold though with an early frost and afternoon temperatures only 6C to 7C.

"Unfortunately the weather will go rapidly downhill on Sunday. Becoming very wet from the west with many western areas receiving 20mm to 25mm of rainfall. Also becoming very windy with gales. It's not a day to plan anything outdoors.

"There'll be a deep area of low pressure to the north of the UK early next week with a colder north west flow. We'll see a lot of showers, and many of them wintry with hail and sleet at lower levels and snow for higher ground from Wales northwards.

"More wet weather in the middle of next week will be followed by another colder north west flow and wintry showers, possibly falling as snow at lower levels further south next Thursday and Friday. It will often be windy too.

"This very unsettled westerly weather pattern looks set to continue through to early March with our weather coming from the northern Atlantic, and sometimes colder Arctic plunges from Greenland and Iceland."
