A passenger was stung by a scorpion on a flight from Los Angeles to Portland before cabin crew killed it.

The woman was stung on the hand before the Alaska Airlines flight took off and the aircraft was forced to return to the terminal at Los Angeles International Airport on Saturday night.

According to KTLA, paramedics boarded the plane and treated the woman.

Cole Cosgrove, spokesman for Alaska Airlines, said maintenance workers then checked the aircraft to ensure there were no other scorpions on board.

Mike Parker, a passenger on the flight, told CNN: "No one seemed frantic at all, not even the woman who was stung. The flight attendants did a great job, as did the captain."

The plane had arrived from Los Cabos, Mexico but it is unclear how the scorpion got on the aircraft.

Flight 567 took off about an hour later but the woman stung remained in Los Angeles.

Oregon State University's men's basketball team were on the flight and coach Wayne Tinkle, who was sitting two rows behind the woman, told ESPN: "The plane was coming from Mexico before us, and (the scorpion) was on the plane," Tinkle said. "The woman was a real champ. She acted like it was a mosquito bite. They got it off her, but the needle was stuck."
