Gibraltar airport closed after security threat on Easyjet plane bound for UK

Gibraltar airport was closed following a security alert on an Easyjet plane.

Military explosive experts were called to examine a suspect piece of luggage on the plane bound for the UK.

All 156 passengers and six crew members left the plane and the airport was closed for about two hours.

The passengers were moved to a secure area in the airport and their baggage was offloaded and re-screened, reports the Independent.

According to the Daily Mail, the border with Spain was closed, and people were warned to stay away from the airport while an investigation took place.

The flight to London Gatwick took off three hours later, reports the BBC.

Easyjet said the delay was "due to a technical issue which resulted in a smell of smoke".

Easyjet said the issue was "fully investigated prior to the departure" in line with "standard operating procedures".
