You'd be forgiven for thinking that you can't go wrong with whisking someone away for a romantic getaway for Valentine's Day. However, you'd be wrong. A recent study asked people to vote on the places they considered the least romantic in the UK - so if you have a weekend away planned in Scunthorpe, Bradford, Blackpool, Birmingham or London, then you may need to re-think your plans.

The good news is that you can set your ambitions far higher - without having to set the budget beyond your reach - because researchers at travel comparison site Kayak have identified the five cheapest overseas destinations for a four star romantic break.

And if you're keen to keep the costs down, it's also worth being aware of the five priciest weekend destinations that the site also identified.

Kayak had some good news when it came to the most popular destinations for lovebirds this year. Barcelona took the top spot (from Paris), and their researchers found a four star weekend break there for just £183 - the sixth cheapest destination. This compares impressively to the break in Paris, which costs £212 and is 12th on the list. The second most popular destination is Amsterdam (which costs just £177 and comes third on the list).

So before you saddle your loved one to a wet weekend in Scunthorpe (and resign yourself to it becoming the ultimate test of your relationship) it's worth bearing in mind that you could be reaping the romantic rewards that come with jetting them off for a cheap weekend in Amsterdam or Dublin instead.
