The big chill hitting Britain shows no sign of abating - and it's so cold that the sea is now freezing over. Really.

Whitehaven Harbour in Cumbria was completely blanketed in ice on Thursday morning after enduring a week of sub-zero temperatures.

Speaking to the Mirror, Tony Taylor, marina supervisor in Whitehaven, said: "It is unusual for the harbour to freeze, it hasn't happened for a good few years."

The 'Beast from the East' brought a fresh bout of snow to Britain on Thursday, with eastern areas of the UK being particularly affected.

According to the Independent, a 4,000-mile-wide plume of cold air blew in from Siberia, sending temperatures plummeting.

While the paper adds that snow may lessen from Thursday, temperatures will continue to feel very cold going into the weekend.

Indeed, the Met Office has issued yellow warnings for snow and ice going into Friday across most of England.

Temperatures are expected to hit as low as -4C in some places in the south east.

A tweet from the Met Office said it would be "bitterly cold" on Friday, especially in the south.
