In the world of classic cars it's provenance that really bumps prices up. Looking for a Cadillac driven by Elvis? You'll need to dig a lot deeper into your pockets than for any ordinary Caddy. And if it's a car owned or raced by a famous driver, then you'll need to write a blank cheque if that racer's reputation is big enough.
And it's clearly the same thing with karts, as the machine once raced by F1 legend Ayrton Senna is now up for auction at Bonhams with a value estimated at £18,000 to £21,000 – big money for a basic single-seater. This 1981 DAP Kart is the last kart the Brazilian competed in at the 1981 World Championship race in northern Italy before graduating to the world of Formula Ford 1600 racing.

Set to go under the hammer tomorrow in a sale at Bonhams' Les Grandes Marques du Monde au Grand Palais in Paris, potential owners are expected to have to stump up around 24,000 to 28,000 euros to bag the DAP kart that signified Senna's continued rise to the top of motor sport. Set up to Senna's exact preferences before the race in Parma, this kart was bought by the current owner, who used to work for DAP, all the way back in September 1981, making this the first time it has been available to buy for more than 33 years.

Initially bought without the engine, the kart has since had an identical engine fitted and is now described as being in 'as new' condition, being used for less than two hours since Senna was at the wheel.
