Waterloo station evacuated after passenger alarm set off by mistake

London's Waterloo station was briefly evacuated this morning after a passenger accidentally set off an alarm.

Thousands of commuters were forced to evacuate the busy station during morning rush hour when the alarm was set off in error on a tube platform.

Police ordered a full evacuation when the alarm sounded at 9.01am this morning.

Waterloo Uderground station links the Northern, Bakerloo, Jubilee and Waterloo and City lines.

According to the Evening Standard, no Tubes were stopping at the station and the mainline rail station was also evacuated.

The station re-opened within around 20 minutes.

A British Transport Police spokeswoman said: "A platform alarm on the Tube was activated by mistake but it has been re-set and the station i sbeing re-opened".

According to the Independent, frightened passengers were unaware the evacuation was caused by a false alarm and signs outside the station displayed red warning reading: "Emergency, don not enter".

Waterloo is London's busiest station, seeing more than 89 million passengers arrive and depart every year, according to Transport for London's latest figures.
