After hurricane-force winds and rain battered the north of the UK on Friday, the Met Office has warned that on Saturday the rain will move south eastwards and "bring much colder conditions".

Speaking to ITV News, Met Office forecaster Alex Burkill said: "Some showers are likely to be heavy and may well fall as sleet or snow, particularly in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the north of England and some of the showers could bring significant accumulations, particularly over higher ground.

"We could widely see 2cm to 4cm (up to 1.5ins) of snow, and perhaps 8cm (just over 3ins) on the highest ground."

Sky News reports that more than 100,000 homes were left without power on Friday as 113mph hit the north of Britain.

The Highlands, islands, Aberdeenshire and central Scotland were the worst hit.

An amber weather warning has been issued by the Met Office for Scotland's Shetland Islands and north tip of the country as flooding is expected across the north of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Chief forecaster Leon Brown at The Weather Channel tells AOL Travel: "Britain is currently in the firing line for any Atlantic storms with a ferocious jet stream. So far the jet stream has been steering the storms past the north of Scotland, and the next few storms will take a similar track.

"However, we have big concerns later next week when a violent storm may well take a more southerly track and threaten severe gales and storm force winds across central and southern parts of the UK, and hence much of the population. Be prepared for a lot of travel disruption next Thursday and batten down the hatches!

"Strong winds are expected on Saturday morning across Wales, and central to southern England. 65mph gusts in Wales and to the lee of the Pennines in Yorkshire may cause some structural damage and dangerous driving conditions. As a cold front moves southwards on Saturday morning there may be some damaging gusts too across central and South East England of up to 60mph.

Leon says that Britons can expect morning temperatures of 12 or 13C, "but dropping to 6C behind the cold front by the afternoon".

He adds: "There will be squally hail, sleet and snow showers on Saturday over Scotland, Northern Ireland and North West England moving south to North Wales by evening.

"Sunday remains windy with more persistent rain and hill snow for Scotland while southern Britain remains dry and bright."

For next week, another storm will pass the north of Scotland early Monday and we can expect a very wet and windy morning quickly followed by much colder weather. Mr Brown warns of a lot of wintry showers in gusty west winds, with snow over hills as far south as Dartmoor and Exmoor by Tuesday.

"We then need to watch how another huge and very deep Atlantic low will develop and move east on Wednesday to Thursday, which at the moment threatens to move on a more southerly track. We can expect everything from blizzards over the Scottish Highlands to heavy rain in the south and winds potentially reaching storm force over western Britain with 90mph gusts."
