Police have clocked 22,000 drivers speeding through a village in just 16 days.

Local residents in Ticknall, Derbyshire, had complained to police about drivers speeding through their village.

So officers stepped into conduct a speed survey, and found that one in six motorists, 22,14 out of 118,107, were breaking the 30mph speed limit.

Villagers had been using their own speed guns to catch drivers breaking the speed limit on the A514. Offenders were then sent letters from the police telling them they risked prosecution if they did it again.

However, local campaigners were recently told to stop using their own speed gun because it was creating too much paperwork for the police, who then launched their own investigations.

Campaigner Kevin Harris welcomed the figures released by Derbyshire Police's Casualty Reduction Enforcement Support Team (CREST).

According to the Daily Mail, he said: "These figures complement our figures. The figures have not surprised us because we live on this road so we know what it is like."

CREST undertook the speed survey over a 16-day period from 3 to 18 December.

They used two rubber tubes fixed across the road connected to a survey counter that collected data on traffic flow and speed of traffic.

According to the Daily Telegraph, for the entire 16-day period, 118,107 were tracked using the road. A total of 17,399 vehicles (or 14.7 per cent) were travelling at a speed greater than 36mph.

An additional 4,715 vehicles (or four per cent) were travelling above 40mph.

Mr Harris says locals now want to know what will be done to control speeding in the area, and vowed to continue doing their own speed watch.
