A six-year-old boy is fighting for his life in hospital after being severely injured in a plane crash that killed both his parents.

The pilot of the plane, the boy's father, Lewis Tonkinson, 50, attempted an emergency landing on a grass airstrips after weather conditions became dangerous on Saturday afternoon.

However, he reportedly struck woodland near Popham airfield in Hampshire and was pronounced dead at the scene, along with his wife, Sally, 44, from Alcestor in Warwickshire.

The couple's son, George, is critically ill at Southampton General Hospital. It is believed the family had been flying back from a trip to the Isle of Wight.

According to the Daily Telegraph, an air ambulance crew, three ambulances, fire crews and police attended the crash site, which was discovered by a walker in Blackwood Forest near the airstrip.

The Express and Star reports that Mr Tonkinoon as director of his own company, Pinnacle Marketing Communcations.

He had just turned 50 on New Year's Day, and married wife Sally last November.

According to the Daily Mail, a neighbour of their £1.5 million home in Alcestor said: "We're all devastated, just devastated. It's such a shock to all of us.

"We hadn't seen them since before Christmas, but we didn't know they had gone away.

"Our thoughts are with the family and the little boy. It's just absolutely tragic."


The Air Accident Investigation Branch has launched an investigation into the crash.
