Tourist trips to the Brecon Beacons in Wales have mistakenly been advertised with a famous beauty spot - from the Lake District.

Bosses at VisitBritain have been left red-faced after their website had been promoting £45 day trips from Cardiff to the Brecon Beacons with an image of Ashness Bridge in Cumbria.

The advert read: "Tour stops include Brecon Beacons National Park - see the stunning lakes, waterfalls and peaks of this world famous site."

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Greg Stephenson, Cumbria Tourism's PR Manager, said: "It's flattering that VisitBritain have used Surprise View, Ashness Bridge, to portray the Welsh countryside, after all the Lake District's offering is the best in the world.

"I know historically the two areas were closely tied. Perhaps we should reunite and create a greater Cumbria to assist our friends in London, especially as they don't seem to know their geography."

According to the West Morland Gazette, hotelier Jonathan Denby, who is President of the Lakes Hospitality Association, added: "This is what happens when you have a Welshman in charge of Cumbria Tourism- congratulations to Ian Stephens for getting into the psyche of Welsh tourism."

Brecon-born Alexandra Marr, of A Marr and Associates, who represents the Brecon Beacons National Park, was very diplomatic about the error, telling Wales Online: "Brecon Beacons Tourism are always grateful for the support of VisitBritain in overseas markets and have welcomed international visitors and journalists as a result.

"Both destinations are equally picturesque, and we have an open invitation to tourism officials to the National Park, to aid familiarisation."

A spokesman for VisitBritain said the incident was just a "glitch" that occurred because of how the photograph had been tagged, and the image has now been replaced.
