British tourist almost loses leg in Thailand boat propeller accident

A British tourist is in hospital after being struck by the propellor of a boat which nearly severed her leg off the coast of Koh Tao, Thailand.

Police have reported that 20-year-old Alice Davies nearly lost her leg in the accident, which occurred during a diving lesson with the Scuba Shack near Koh Hin Sam Konwith with other tourists on Tuesday evening.

It is believed the turbine of the boat, from a different diving company, severely lacerated and broke two bones in Alice's leg - causing her to lose a large amount of blood.

Reports say that the reversing boat struck Alice whilst she was swimming to shore with other divers.

She has been taken to Thai International Hospital on nearby Koh Samui, where medical workers say she is now recovering.

Speaking to the Phuket Gazette, Lt Col Napa Senatip of the Koh Tao Police, said: "A motorboat, Thanicha Namchok from dive company Roctopus, was carrying diving equipment and had got stuck on some rocks very close to where Ms Davies and her class were getting out of the water.

"Boonrod Klubnak, the motorboat driver, was trying to free the boat by speeding up the engine, and Ms Davies was sucked toward the propeller blade by the force of the engine."

He added: "The propeller broke both of the bones in the bottom half of her right leg, but her leg was not severed. She was in surgery for many hours, but it went well and she is now stable."

According to the Daily Mail, Boonrod has been arrested, but has not been formally charged with a crime.

He is reportedly insured and willing to pay compensation to the victim.
