The Fixer: switching energy provider

Updated

Have you been left out of pocket due to poor service or sharp practice? Do you have a money problem that won't go away?

It can seem impossible to get a fair result when you are battling a financial issue alone. But never fear! The AOL Money Fixer is here to help.

Dear Fixer,
I have always used British Gas for my gas and electricity. However, my son reckons that I would pay a lot less if I switched provider.

So my question is, what will switching involve? I don't really want someone coming round and massing with my heating system, but I would be willing to do it if it will really save me a lot of money.

Thank you in advance for your help with this.

F Sharp, Plymouth

Dear Mr Sharp,

You are not alone in staying faithful to your energy provider. In fact, some six in 10 consumers have never switched.

Your son is right, though. Loyalty does not pay when it comes to your gas and electricity supply.

It is estimated that an average household could save a massive £200 a year by switching on to one of the best deals.

And the even better news is that switching is easy - and a lot quicker than it used to be.

All you have to do is check your latest bill from British Gas to see how much you pay on your current plan, and how much energy you use.

Then visit a comparison website to check out the top deals, many of which offer the security of fixed payments as well as low prices.

Once you have chosen a tariff, apply online and sit back and let the company you are moving to do the work for you.

The switch should be completed within 17 days - rather than five weeks, as used to be the case - and there is no need to worry about someone coming round to mess with your heating system.

Switching energy provider does not involve any work being done inside or outside your home.
