A mother and her son have been caught on camera escaping their car just seconds before a train crashes into the vehicle on a level crossing in Massachusetts.

The footage was captured by motorist Tyler Campana as she waited in traffic on Friday.

It shows Kerin Joy and her son Jacob, 15, running from the car seconds before the commuter train crashes into the vehicle.

CBS Local reports that Kerin had been sitting by the rail tracks when a car bumped her from behind, pushing her vehicle into the path of the oncoming train.

According to the Independent, Kerin said: "I didn't see the car from behind me. I just felt the impact of it. And I was in shock. I could hear the train coming but I couldn't see it. I looked over at my son and he said, 'get out of the car!'

"I ran to the sidewalk, it maybe took me 20 seconds to get there and turnaround and the train had hit my car."

In fact, there were just 16 seconds between the Joys leaving the car and the train hitting hit.

Kerin added: "I'm so thankful to Jake that he told me to get out of that car. He saved our lives. I don't know if I would have gotten out."
