McDonalds restaurant shows porn by mistake - and nobody complains
McDonalds likes to bill itself as a family restaurant - but one branch in Switzerland risked shocking its customers over the weekend by showing hardcore porn on the TV.
On Saturday night, the outlet accidentally showed a series of X-rated episodes from German channel Sport 1's Sexy Sports Clips programme - and for a long time, none of the staff noticed.
The incident occurred in Zuchwil, a town of about 8,600 people in the Swiss area of Solothurn. Luckily, there were no children in the restaurant at the time, and none of the adults complained. Eventually, staff spotted the offending material themselves and changed the channel back.
"We were only a group of men so it didn't bother us, although what would have happened if there was a family in the restaurant at that time I don't know," 24-year-old customer Steffen Reiniger told the New York Post.
McDonald's has apologised for the incident, saying that the TV was usually tuned to the Eurosport channel, but that staff sometimes changed channel at the request of a customer. Because the alternative channel was called 'Sports 1', staff failed to realised it might have X-rated content.
As for the delay in spotting the mistake, McDonalds says it shows the staff's dedication.
"If our employees didn't immediately realise what was going on it's because they were concentrating on our customers and their work," spokesperson Aglae Strachwitz told 20 Minuten.
Porn certainly seems to pop up in the unlikeliest of places. In October, we reported on the case of a Notting Hill estate agent which started broadcasting a pornographic TV channel in its window one night. The agent, Faron Sutaria, blamed the event on a mischief-maker with a universal remote - and updated its systems immediately.
Famously, the US Superbowl was disrupted in 2009 when a former Cox Cable employee, Frank Tanori Gonzalez, managed to broadcast porn for 37 seconds. And in 2007, even Playhouse Disney fell victim to the porn plague, transmitting porn in the middle of cartoons aimed at pre-schoolers.
Teachers need to be particularly careful. Earlier this year, a video of an orgy was accidentally shown to Italian primary school children. And in 2010, a Devon teacher was disciplined for accidentally showing children indecent images.
