The Met Office has issued warnings for snow and ice across many parts of Britain as wintry weather sweeps across the country causing "difficult driving conditions due to strong winds and blowing snow."

Forecasters at the Met Office say that accumulating snow may lead to travel disruption through parts of Scotland. It adds that "icy stretches are likely to form on surfaces, as well as strong winds leading to reduced visibilities and poor driving conditions."

Cold air will move southeast across the UK on Sunday and showers will form and push into areas exposed to the strong west to northwesterly winds.

Meanwhile, Leon Brown at The Weather Channel says there will be some snow by Sunday night as far south as Dartmoor and Exmoor, and a covering of a few centimetres over the Welsh Hills and 5-10cm for the western Pennines.

WILL IT BE A WHITE CHRISTMAS 2014?

He says: "Even a few hail and snow showers are expected to move through the Cheshire Gap to the Midlands, but little if any accumulation. The Western Highlands can expect 10 to 20cm."

Monday will be another cold day with wintry showers at first over the west and then a widespread frost on Tuesday night. Temperatures will be potentially as low as -8C in central Scotland and -4C in eastern England.

Leon says that Tuesday looks like a cold and bright day for much of England but windy and wet over the North West with a spell of snow over the Scottish Highlands.

As a warm front moves east on Tuesday night temperatures will lift to their highest in the middle of the night, reaching 10C in the south, before another cold front sweeps southwards early Wednesday, and a return to windy and showery weather for the north with snow on hills.
