A British tourist has died on holiday in Australia after plunging 90 metres to his death from a cliff on Sydney's northern beaches.

The 25-year-old man was with five friends and had climbed a fence to watch the sunrise at North Head on Sunday.

Inspector Nigel Taylor told the Sydney Morning Herald that the group climbed over the fence and walked along the escarpment before sitting beside the cliff.

"When they returned to the lookout, the young fella has gone to have a closer look and fallen over the edge," he said.

Police received the call at 6.45am and retrieved his body from the rock platform 90m below the lookout.

NSW Police has not confirmed the man's identity.

Inspector Belinda Caddy told Nine News: "It looks like a tragic accident and we feel for all of the people that were there and obviously our thoughts will be with his family when we inform them."

Last year, a man died after falling down a cliff in South Wales while trying to rescue his pet puppy.

Rhys Clark, 27, was walking with his girlfriend Ania Galanska, 25, and their dog at Southerndown, near Bridgend, when their puppy fell.

The couple tried to reach the dog but both fell off the 150ft cliffs to the rocky beach below.

Mr Clark was killed instantly in the fall and Galanska suffered multiple injuries. The puppy also died.
