A golfer was killed by a crocodile as he tried to retrieve golf balls from a dam at Kruger National Park in South Africa.

The crocodile grabbed 29-year-old Jacques van der Sandt and disappeared into the water on Wednesday night, according to park officials.

The golf course is located next to a staff residential area within the park and the victim was the son of a park employee, reports Traveller 24.

According to ABC News, rangers killed the animal after a two-hour search.

Oubaas Coetzer, a police officer, said the crocodile attacked van der Sandt while he was standing at waist height in the water and reaching below the surface to feel for golf balls on the bottom of the dam.

"One guy challenged the other to see who can retrieve the most golf balls," Coetzer said

"In the competition they went under [water] three times and then the crocodile attacked. He was found at around 03:00 with bite marks on his arms and upper body. No body parts were torn off", he added.
