Freak storms in Spain's Canary Islands have left thousands of holidaymakers stranded as flights have been cancelled and delayed over the bad weather.

The Spanish Meteorology Agency (AEMET) has issued red alerts in five of the seven Canary Islands for strong winds of up to 80mph.

Red severe weather warnings are in force in El Hierro, Gran Canaria, La Gomera, La Palma and Tenerife.

According to the Mirror, around 180 flights have been cancelled or badly delayed and island ferry services have been suspended.

Beaches, which are usually busy at this time of year, were hit by 30ft waves.

Spanish newspaper El Mundo reports that one man died in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, after a sheet of metal was carried through the air by the strong winds and hit him in the face.

The 53-year-old was killed in the freak accident at 9.30pm on Friday and died in hospital on Saturday.

Earlier this week, a freak storm ripped through Torremolinos in Spain's Costa Del Sol causing chaos for tourists as a tornado wrecked beach bars, ruined roofs and uprooted trees.

The waterspout tornado hit various parts of Malaga, including a caravan park where two mobile homes were lifted and moved 10 metres, on a three-mile journey.

It also damaged 17 parked cars owned by a car hire company.

The tornado hit at around 7am on Thursday morning, ripping off the roof of the petrol station near the airport.
