Bus crashes onto pavement after driver suffers cardiac arrest at wheel
The moment a bus driver careered off the road after suffering a heart attack at the wheel in Birmingham has been caught on CCTV.
The driver crashed into three cars before careering onto the pavement, where he narrowly missed a pedestrian.
Firefighters, police and an air ambulance were called to the scene in Sparkhill, reports the Birmingham Mail.
Some have suggested that National Express worker David Williams was a hero and that he intentionally swerved the bus into safety barriers to protect his passengers.
Sadly, the driver was later pronounced dead at Heartlands Hospital.
According to the Mirror, a West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman told the Birmingham Mail: "CPR was performed on the bus driver and a defibrillator was used.
"Accompanied by the Midlands Air Ambulance doctor, he was taken to Heartlands Hospital where, despite the best efforts of all medical staff involved in the case, he was confirmed dead."
The Daily Record reports that a Facebook message read: "Brave man.Trying to protect his passengers while he fell so gravely ill at the wheel."
A worker at a shop on the street he crashed onto told the Birmingham Mail: "It was really dramatic and very sad, I couldn't believe it.
"On other days it's very busy here so it could have been much worse. I want to send my condolences to the bus driver's family and friends."
