A passenger on board a Mango plane in South Africa has been forced to clean up his own mess after pulling his pants down and urinating in the plane's galley.

The incident occurred on Sunday night during a flight from Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg.

The passenger was reportedly intoxicated and had wanted to use the bathroom during takeoff.

Mango Airlines spokesman Hein Kaiser confirmed the incident and said the man was reminded to take his seat during takeoff, but that he then decided to walk to the front of the plane and urinate in full view of fellow passengers.

He added that if the man had been that desperate, he could have asked to use the toilet.

According to Traveller24, he said: "When the commander of a flight advises travellers to fasten their seatbelts, it is for good reason and is standard operating procedure on airlines the world over.

"In rare instances, when a traveller's need for the lavatory is immediate and the urgency occurs during turbulent conditions, the captain may permit use of the ablution facilities."

Times Live reports that the man was detained when the flight landed at OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg.

He is expected to appear in court this week.

Mr Kaiser added: "We apologise to other passengers on board whose comfort was compromised due to the passenger's negative social behaviour."
