A man making an epic 15,000km (approx 9,000 miles) charity trek across Australia dressed as a Stormtrooper is eating roadkill to get him through.

Scott Loxley, a 47-year-old father-of-three, is a year into his 18-month-long trek across Australia, which he is undertaking dressed as a Stormtrooper for the new Monash Children's Hospital in Melbourne.

His journey has so far seen him walk 9,000km from Melbourne, to Tasmania, through the Nullarbor Plain, up the west coast to Broome, before heading inland to Darwin. He has even faced a sweltering 45-degree heatwave in his costume.

He left his new wife and family in Melbourne on 2 November 2013, and has so far raised more than $22,000 (approx £12,000) for the hospital. He hopes to raise $100,000 before it opens in 2016.

Loxley, a former soldier, is a member of the 501st Legion, a volunteering group that dedicates itself to supporting children's charities by dressing up in Star Wars costumes.

And to keep himself going on his gruelling journey, he has been eating roadkill, lizards, snakes and kangaroos.

According to mashable.com, the searing heat of the day sometimes creates a ready-made dinner by the side of the road, or he will take snakes and cable tie them to his trolley alive until they are ready to eat.

He added: "I put the lizards on the coals, put them in a zip lock bag for protein and snack on them on the road."

"If you think you can walk in the country, this is what you need to do. It was one of the reasons I thought I could do it."

Before he set off, Scott visited the Monash Children's ward. On his Facebook page, he wrote: "One of my recent trips to the Monash Childrens ward put everything into perspective. No matter how tough things get on the road, I know that there are kids battling just to get through every day and doing it with a smile on their face."

To mark his halfway point in Darwin, Scott recently came face to face with Chopper the 5.5 metre crocodile for a stunt at Darwin's Crocosaurus Cove.

Scott has 6,000km left to cover, and hopes to be back in Melbourne in July 2015.
