Unlikely places to find a holiday island

We all dream of holidaying on a beautiful desert island from time to time. But you don't need to fly all the way to the Caribbean or Indian Ocean to find your island paradise: the world is full of unusual islands in some very strange places: on top of a volcano and slap bang in the middle of a city to name but two.

While these islands might not be the idyllic, sipping-on-a-coconut-under-a-palm-tree kind, they certainly have a lot to boast about. Take Rome's Isola Tiberina. It's easy to miss but a beautiful spot for a stroll and to see Basilica San Bartolomeo all'Isola.

Visitors to the Philippines, meanwhile can witness the world's largest island-within-a-lake-on-an-island -within-a-lake-on-an island (yes, we know that's a lot to take in!). But while it has a 'world's largest' to its name, Vulcan Point happens to be located in the world's smallest active volcano.

Other unusual places where islands are located include under bridges and in waterfalls, but the oddest of them all has to be on a yacht. Tropical Island Paradise was designed with the super-rich in mind and allows yachties to own a portable tropical island. The stunning yacht boasts a volcano, waterfall, helicopter landing pad and huge bar behind a series of beach cabanas. Oh, we forgot it comes with a private beach cove too!
