Britain's best and worst hotel chains named in new Which? poll

A new Which? poll has revealed that Sofitel is Britain's best hotel chain - while Britannia Hotels is the worst.

The poll quizzed 6,000 travellers on nine categories, including customer service, cleanliness, food, and value for money.

The most expensive chain to feature in the poll, Sofitel, was named top. Its room prices are on average £144 a night, but apparently you get what you pay for as it scored five stars in seven categories, gaining a total score of 83 per cent, reports the Daily Telegraph.

However, Premier Inn was snapping at its heels with an overall customer score of 82 per cent. Considering the average cost of a night at a Premier Inn is £61 it appears this could be a great place for budget-conscious travellers to lay their heads.

At the other end of the scale was Britannia Hotels, which scored 33 per cent, the lowest of the 29 chains reviewed.

Speaking to the Guardian, Which? travel editor Jill Starley-Grainger said: "It can be a bit of a lottery staying with popular UK hotel chains as there's such a massive gap in standards between the best and worst.

"Hotels that have fared badly need to look at their customers' feedback and learn where they need to up their game."

The paper added that Travelodge, the second-most used chain after Premier Inn, was near the bottom of the table with 60 per cent, however it improved its score from 50 per cent last year.

Rounding off the top five after Sofitel and Premier Inn were Warner Leisure Hotels with 80 per cent, Hampton by Hilton with 78 per cent and Q Hotels, also with 78 per cent.
