'Tunicorn'! Fisherman catch tuna fish with mystery horn
A group of fishermen in Australia were shocked when they reeled in a tuna fish with a large 'horn' growing out of its head.
According to the Metro, Kim Haskell, his brother Jamie and nephew Christopher were on a trip near the Great Barrier Reef when they hooked the fish.
The huge dogtooth tuna fish weighed a whopping 40kg.
The photo was uploaded to Facebook with the caption: "Here is a Dog Tooth Tuna caught on the outer reef just out of Cooktown Queensland with Marlin spike embedded in its head.
"It was totally healed so must have been in it for a while. We were wondering if the spike entered through the mouth because the thin bit was at the end.
"Looked almost too perfectly centred and would not have believed it if we hadn't caught it ourselves.
"Probably the strangest thing I have ever found inside a fish. Has anyone else seen such a thing?"
Other suggestions from Facebook users for what the horn could be included a "stingray spine" and "from the mermaids, lol".
Dogtooth tuna are also known as white tuna, and are distinctive for their large size, growing up 2.50m and 130 kg.
The dogtooth tuna is appreciated as a fine food fish and also as a game fish sought by both rod and reel anglers and spearfishermen.
