Michael Schumacher's doctor says there is hope for the Formula One star as he is no longer in a coma and is slowly getting better.

Dr. Jean-Francois Payen has predicted a possible recovery within three years.

Dr. Payen treated Michael for nearly six months after his skiing accident last year and visited the Schumacher family at home in Switzerland to track his patient's progress, reports the Metro.

"Life after a head injury is punctuated by stages," Dr Payen said.

Schumacher was discharged from a rehabilitation clinic in Lausanne, Switzerland two months ago.

The 45-year-old is currently being treated at home after spending six months in a medically-induced coma following the accident in Meribel, France.

News of Schumacher's predicted recovery comes after his 15-year-old son Mick revealed that his father is "waking up very slowly; very slowly" earlier this month.

Schumacher is being cared for by a team of 15 experts at his home. It is understood he remains immobile and unable to speak, reports the Daily Mail.
