Woman destroys ATM

A woman in a shopping centre in Dogguan, China, shocked a crowd of onlookers, by tearing apart an ATM with her bare hands. She was incredibly frustrated with a cash machine, which refused to give her any cash, so she laid into it. Her efforts destroyed the machine entirely.

Footage of the event has surfaced from onlookers who gathered to watch the spectacle and filmed it on their phones. According to the China Smack website, they watched alongside security guards, but no-one tried to stop her as they were concerned she may be in a fragile state.

The News 163 website reported that the woman took off the plastic surround first, then tore the computer display out, before returning to it in order to punch the machine. A representative from the shopping centre speculated that it may have been an old machine, which meant the plastic had become brittle and was easier to destroy.

Once the woman had finished destroying the ATM, she stood by the machine until she was led away by police.

Frustrations
ATM's can be immensely frustrating to use. This isn't the first woman to react forcefully. We reported back in 2011 on the woman from Wiltshire who was so angry that an ATM wouldn't give her any money that she took of her shoe, and bashed the cashpoint with it around 50 times. The woman became an internet sensation after CCTV footage of the incident was released.

Clearly not everyone reacts so forcefully, but we've all been left tearing our hair out because of a broken machine. In a recent survey by Thinkmoney, people ranked not being able to withdraw money from an ATM as their third biggest financial irritation in life - after unexpected charges and misleading offers.

The kind of ATM we like
However, not all ATM experiences are so frustrating. We reported in July on TD Bank in Canada, which installed cashpoints to say thanks to its customers. Everyone using the machines at four branches in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver was given $20 dollars to thank them for banking with the brand (from a talking ATM), and some customers got even more lavish gifts.

Many of the people who got bigger presents were regular customers who staff had got to know. One got tickets to Trinidad so she could visit her daughter who was suffering from cancer. And one mother of two young boys got two $1,000 cheques for her sons' education.
