A 9-year-old boy lost his arm after a bear attacked him at a zoo in China.

The boy stuck his arm through the bars of the enclosure in order to try and feed the bear at the zoo in Pingdingshan Hebin park in Henan province, only to have it bitten off.

According to the South China Morning Post, the boy had visited the zoo with his grandfather but was reportedly exploring the zoo by himself when he cam across the bear exhibit.

He was rushed to hospital and doctors had to amputate his entire right arm, reports the Metro.

A spokesman for the zoo said it is actively cooperating with medical staff to assist with the family's costs.
