After a mild weekend with temperatures reaching 21C in southern Britain on Saturday, the cold and wet weather is set to return next week - and we could see the first snowfall of the season.

Forecasters have said that Hurricane Gonzalo is heading towards the UK via Bermuda and "is the most powerful Atlantic hurricane (by sustained winds) since Hurricane Igor in mid-September 2010."

The Weather Channel's Leon Brown says: "This weekend the storm will swing to the west of Newfoundland and become extra tropical as it gets caught in the jet stream.

"Computer models still have a number of solutions, but the remains will arrive over the UK next Tuesday. Most recent computer models suggest heavy rain and strong-to-gale force winds to the UK on Tuesday morning, with 20 to 40mm widely over the UK."

The chief forecaster adds: "It may also draw down dome colder weather for a short time, so people may feel quite chilly in gusty north-westerly winds by Tuesday afternoon. The Scottish Highlands could see some snow for a time early on Tuesday, depending on the rack of the low pressure system."

Before the storm hits Britain next week, this weekend will see temperatures of 20 to 21C.

Leon says: "Sunday will be the best day with plenty of sunshine over southern Britain, but it'll be breezy too."

After the heavy rain, wind and even snow early next week, the rest of next week is expected to become mild again and will be mainly dry in the south.

But Leon adds: "There's more wet weather approaching by Friday for the north."

The Met Office says: "Wednesday will likely see a mixture of sunny spells and blustery showers across the country with the risk of thunderstorms in the east, and some showers falling as snow over the Scottish mountains.

"Temperatures will be slightly cooler than average. Winds remain strong, as with the past few days, making it feel colder."
