A huge storm stretching across the Atlantic triggered by Hurricane Gonzalo could batter Britain with strong winds, rain and thunder.

Weather experts are unsure exactly when the storm will hit, but it could be from this weekend. The upside? It will bring warmer weather with it, too.

Leon Brown, meteorologist at The Weather Channel UK, told Aol Travel: "There will be a change in the weather pattern from Wednesday to a more 'westerly' flow from the Atlantic and a strong jet stream. This will bring more wet weather, but also some very mild temperatures for a time as southerly winds strengthen and draw warmth northwards from Iberia to western Europe, and the southern UK.

"The detail remains difficult for this weekend with a cold front meandering and waving about over the UK. To the south of it, there will be warm temperatures but cooler and fresher to the north. Eventually the cold front will clear east by Monday next week.

"The uncertainty for next week is the time and track of the remains of Hurricane Gonzalo, which is a risk for Bermuda as it speeds north on Friday.

"The extra tropical remnants will be caught in the jet stream on Monday and move rapidly eastwards towards north west Europe next Tuesday. At the moment it could bring a wet and windy spell to the UK next Tuesday or dissipate and track further south.

"The rest of next week will be often windy and wet, then there are hints of a colder spell by the weekend of 25 October and last few days of the month.

"The warmest temperatures this Friday look like widely 18C to 19C across central and eastern England, then on Saturday 20C to 21C across the south east and East Anglia, but also 18C to 19C across the Midlands, east Wales and north east England, and on Sunday again 20C to 21C over the East Midlands, London and East Anglia.

"So, a warm end to the week, but it will be windy too, so may not feel so warm over western England and Wales."
