Smoke in cabin forces emergency evacuation of Emirates plane in Pakistan

Passengers were forced to evacuate an Emiratesplane via emergency chutes after smoke filled the cabin at Pakistan's largest airport.

All 82 passengers and crew jumped down the chutes just minutes before the plane was due to take off at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi on Saturday night, reports the Daily Mail.

The Dubai-bound plane had just pushed back from the gate when an emergency was declared.

It came to a halt on the tarmac as smoke poured out of the cabin.

Pervez George, a Pakistan civil aviation spokesman, said everyone got out safely and all passengers were taken to a lounge to wait for another aircraft.

According to ABC News, the airline later said that the Emirates flight EK609 from Karachi was cancelled due to a "technical issue" and apologised for the inconvenience.

Fox News reports that the source of the smoke was not immediately known.

In early September, a plane packed with holidaymakers returning from Ibiza had to make an emergency landing at East Midlands Airport - after smoke filled the cabin.

Jet2 said there had been a "minor electrical problem".

Malcolm Yates, a passenger from Lincolnshire, said people were screaming and that the intercom failed and there was no communication between cabin staff and passengers.

Passengers had to leave the plane via emergency exits, and one described it as "chaos".

A Jet2 spokesman said: "All passengers were looked after by our airport team. A full investigation is now under way. The safety of our passengers is of paramount importance."
