The Met Office has issued yellow warnings for rain and wind across parts of Britain over the next 24 hours.

Weather forecasters say heavy rain accompanied by gale force southeasterly winds will move eastwards across Northern Ireland late Sunday evening and overnight.

The rain will clear the east coast on Monday morning but "strong winds, accompanied by heavy rain will move eastwards across the UK on Monday."

Gales or even severe gales are likely around exposed coasts and high ground in the west and north on Monday morning.

Met Office forecasters said "winds will increase leading to gusts of 60-70mph around exposed coasts and hills of Wales, northwest England, parts of Northern Ireland (especially the east) and western and northern parts of Scotland."

Gusts of 50-60 mph are also expected in the southwest of England.

The public was warned that there could be disruptions to travel on Monday morning from the strong winds, standing water on the roads and reduced visibility from spray and driving rain.

On its website, the Met Office said that winds will reach severe gale force in Scotland from Monday evening and will last through Tuesday, before easing on Tuesday night. Gusts of around 65-75mph are expected, accompanied by persistent and at times heavy rain, while large waves may cause spray and over-topping on exposed coastlines.

It said: "The southeasterly winds will strengthen to severe gale force over Shetland before the main core of strongest winds slowly sinks southwards into the northeast Scottish Mainland by Tuesday morning. As this occurs winds will back easterly before easing on Tuesday evening."
