Replacing ink cartridges for the home printer can be a costly and irritating business.

But one technology firm claims to have the solution to the issue with the launch of new cartridge-free devices.

Epson says EcoTank printers come with enough ink to print up to 4,000 pages in black and 6,500 pages in colour.

The manufacturer says this is the equivalent of around two years of ink, "without needing to change a single ink cartridge".

Simon Hanly, product manager, Epson UK said the printers would be targeted at "home and small office customers who want to print everyday documents, such as recipes, homework, emails and maps, and for whom price and convenience are key factors.

The printers include ink tanks that can be refilled using Epson ink "easily and efficiently", the firm said. Users must fill the ink tanks and prime the ink system to set the printers up.

Epson added: "When it's time to refill, affordable, hassle-free ink bottles make the process easy, without the need for cartridges."

The L555 and L355 are available at Dixons Carphone stores for £329 and £249 respectively. They come with a Wi-Fi connection as well as copying and scanning facilities, while the more expensive model has a fax function.

Replacement ink bottles cost £7.99.
