Ford has finally released details of the all-new Mondeo, which replaces the current car, which came out in 2007. This sleek machine not only looks much more modern than the car in showrooms now, but it also packs a huge amount of new technology under the skin. It'll reach UK showrooms towards the end of the year.
We've trawled through all the new tech to round up the features that will make the biggest difference to prospective buyers – from innovative safety kit to powerful new engines.


The new Mondeo is Ford's first car with pedestrian detection technology, which can firmly apply the brakes if it senses pedestrians in the car's path – using a windscreen-mounted camera and radar unit located in the bumper. The system works at up to 50mph and rapidly checks against a database of "pedestrian shapes" to distinguish people from typical roadside scenery and objects.

The Mondeo also has an urban safety system, which can automatically apply the brakes to avoid hitting the vehicle ahead. Additionally, it can recognise road signs, help keep you in your lane on the motorway and offers adaptive cruise control, which automatically maintains a safe distance behind the car in front.

Other safety kit includes inflatable rear seatbelts, which spread forces across a much larger area in the event of a collision to reduce the likelihood of seatbelt injuries. The Mondeo also gets Ford's "MyKey" which limits the car's maximum speed and top audio volume – allowing parents to control the speed their children can drive the car and limit the distraction caused by loud music.


Mondeo owners will now have access to active parking systems, which can help with both parallel parking and bay parking. The driver simply operates the pedals and the car can steer itself into parking spaces for them and the even extricate itself from parallel parking spots.

The Mondeo will be available with a plethora of engine options. Petrol units range from Ford's turbocharged Ecoboost 1.0-litre petrol engine producing 123bhp to a turbocharged 2.0-litre with 237bhp on tap, with 158bhp and 200bhp units on offer too. For the first time in the UK, a Mondeo hybrid will also be available.

As for diesels, which are likely to make up the majority of UK sales, there will be 2.0-litre 148bhp and 178bhp models – with the option of all-wheel drive – along with a 1.6-litre unit with projected CO2 emissions low enough for free road tax under the current system. A more powerful 207bhp version with two turbochargers – a small one to provide instant boost at low engine speeds and a second, larger unit, which takes over at higher engine speeds – will arrive later.

Media system

Ford's "SYNC 2" touchscreen system will feature in the new car, allowing drivers to control phone, entertainment, air conditioning and sat nav functions using simple voice commands. Drivers can even tell the system "I'm hungry" and it'll search for local restaurants.

LED headlights

The Mondeo has LED headlights which are more efficient than traditional units, but can also change the spread of light depending on the car's speed. Around town the lights feature a wide spread of light, but don't travel very far, to give drivers a clear view of any pedestrians at the side of the road. Meanwhile, at speed, the car lengthens the throw of light so that drivers can see a long way ahead, without dazzling oncoming traffic. Even better, the LED units should last the lifetime of the car, too, meaning no more trips to the garage just to get a bulb changed.
