Let's not beat about the bush: this is a particularly depressing time of year. The nights are drawing in and autumn threatens to get chilly - and yet we're still paying off our summer holiday or saving for Christmas, so we can't afford to get away from any of it. This is exactly the time of year when you need a freebie.

Free starter or pudding
If you sign up for the Ember Inns newsletter, you can get your hands on a voucher for a free starter or pudding. You'll need to search for your nearest pub, then input your details. In return, you get a voucher sent to you which you can either print out or show on your smartphone when you order your main course. The only downside is that the deal runs out at the end of the month, so you only have a couple more weeks to take advantage.

Free sharing platter
All Bar One is offering a freebie to anyone who signs up for its newsletter by the end of the month. Once you've signed up, they'll send you a voucher for a free sharing platter with a large glass of wine. The wine tends to cost between £6 and £9, and you'll need to show the voucher when you order.

The sharing platters would otherwise cost between £4.50 and £6, and include things like coppa cured meat with roquito chilli pepper pearls and crystal bread, or salmon ceviche. The deal runs until 14 October, and excludes pizzettas and the nachos platter.

You will get emails from All Bar One once you've signed up, but they've promised to include details of all their offers on these newsletters too, so it may be junk mail - but it's junk mail with an upside.

Fee razor
Razors are now so expensive that supermarkets employ special security measures to stop people shoplifting them. However, the users of HotUKDeals.com have spotted that Gillette is running a special promotion at the moment which means you can get one for free. The deal is meant to advertise the launch of the Gillette Fusion ProGlide Razor - which is apparently very different from its other razors. You just need to enter your details on the website, and they'll send you a free sample.

Free bike lubricant
The O2 Priority Moments app is offering a free 400ml can of bike lubricant (GT-85) at Halfords at the moment. There are a couple of things to bear in mind. The first is that this tends to be a popular deal, so it's worth going sooner rather than later, and the second is that the code lasts an hour - so you shouldn't download it too far in advance. As ever with these deals, they are exclusive to people on O2. However, they apply to those with free Pay As You Go SIMs too, so you can get your hands on the deals without signing up to a contract.

Free Lego
The Daily Mail is running a Lego freebie from this Saturday. It can be a bit of a hassle to get, but they are giving away a free Lego kit worth about £5 every day, so it might be worth it. To take advantage you'll need to buy the paper, then take the voucher to your nearest high street WHSmith or Toys R Us (On Sunday you can get it from Morrisons too). You'll need to redeem it on the same day, so unfortunately you can't stack up your vouchers for a single trip. The kits vary each day and include TMNT Mikey's Mini-Shellraiser on Sunday and Star Wars Anakin's Jedi Interceptor on Thursday.
