Tesco forced stop plan to shoot bird living in its Great Yarmouth store
A Tesco branch in Norfolk has abandoned a plan to have a marksman shoot a bird living in the supermarket.
The retailer had planned to shoot the pied wagtail after it set up home in its Great Yarmouth store and repeated attempts to remove it failed.
As the bird was considered to be a "hygiene" risk, the shop was granted a licence to shoot the protected bird by Natural England.
The move came after the seven inch long feathered intruder had spent several weeks flying around the store and evading all nets and traps set out for it.
However, the plan has now been scrapped after BBC Springwatch presenter Chris Packham got wind of it and tweeted his opposition.
In a tweeted message to Tesco he said: "Can I ask you to rethink the shooting of the wagtail in Gt Yarmouth store please. I'm sure the bird could be caught."
He also called on them to seek advice from the British Trust for Ornithology to catch the wagtail.
After this the store backed down and said it would "explore other options".
