A robber in Abertillery was caught after making two big mistakes. The first was that he attacked and stole a necklace from a man he met at a party - where plenty of people could identify him. His second mistake was that he decided to give the necklace he stole to his girlfriend - who was wearing the evidence when the police came to call.

According to Wales Online, Ryan Meek (29, from Morley Road, Abertillery,) and Dean Partridge (32, from Queen Street, Abertillery,) attacked a man at a party and stole a gold necklace worth £1,400.

Meek had tried to take the necklace, but the victim had refused to let him have it, so he repeatedly punched him - and was joined by Partridge. The two men repeatedly hit him until they could take the necklace.

The Mirror reported that partygoers were able to identify the attackers, and when police called on Meek they found him with his girlfriend, who was wearing a very similar necklace. It even had spots of blood on it - which turned out to belong to the victim.

Meek was jailed for two years and nine months and Partridge was sent to prison for two years and three months.

Bungling burglars
It's a strange way to get caught: but it's far from the strangest. Here are five unusual mistakes made by burglars:

1. In April this year a man from New Orleans was charged with breaking into a car and ransacking it. Police tracked him down because he left his phone on charge in the car.

2. Last May a Birmingham burglar was jailed after being caught out by his sweet tooth. He broke into a property, and after packing up his loot, he sat down for a pasta meal and a packet of Jaffa Cakes. He was caught because of the fingerprints he left on the packet.

3. In June last year a burglar from Norfolk was fund guilty of having stolen a laptop. He was placed at the scene by the fact he was wearing an electronic tag at the time, which recorded his movements.

4. In 2012 a 35-year-old was caught out by a bottle of champagne. He broke into a restaurant in Cambridge - stealing money and a mobile phone. While he was there he swigged from a bottle of Champagne - which gave police all the DNA they needed in order to catch him.

5. And back in 2007 there was the 18 year old burglar in Stockport who was arrested after writing his name on the wall of the property he had broken into.
