Holidaymaker watches as car plunges into canal

Having loaded your car with the family and seemingly all their belongings for your annual holiday, the last thing you'd want is for anything to happen to your car. However, this is precisely what happened to one unlucky holidaymaker, who watched helplessly as his Nissan Primera rolled into Edinburgh's Union canal.
The incident occurred in the rural area of Ratho, to the west of the Capital, where it is understood that the handbrake failed as the car was parked near the waterway, the Edinburgh Evening News reports.

The car's owner was then witnessed desperately trying to retrieve his sodden belongings from the vehicle, which he had just packed up in anticipation of a road trip.

One eyewitness commented: "I was just crossing a bridge at the canal to come and work on someone's boat, when I looked over to my right and saw the car in the water. I jumped over because I thought I had to do something about it.

"So I got a rope and tossed it around the car, and tried to bring it back towards the shore so that boats could still get by, but by that time the car had already settled on the bottom.

"There was nothing that I could do."

The car was later removed from the water by a recovery vehicle. Luckily no one was in the vehicle when it sank.

The car's owner was unavailable for comment, but one local resident said: "He told us he was about to go on holiday, and so the car was absolutely filled with all of his stuff.

"After the recovery vehicle was able to get the car back down onto the ground at the side of the canal, he just started going through his water-logged possessions and trying to salvage what he could.

"He never said where he was headed to on holiday, but I doubt he'll be going anywhere in that car."
