A freshwater crocodile has attacked a tourist swimming in the Wangi Falls plunge pool in Australia.

The Crocodile Management Unit located a 2.1m crocodile at the Litchfield National Park swimming spot where the attack occurred.

Parks and Wildlife spokesman Edwin Edlund said the man's injuries were not serious but he was advised to seek medical attention.

The Russian tourist had been swimming with a group of friends when he was attacked at around 2.30pm on Wednesday.

Mr Edlund said rangers extensively trap the falls at the end of the west season to ensure there are no dangerous crocodiles in the water for when tourists flock to the area for the dry season, and were investigating how this one had remained.

According to NT News, he said: "That's what we're looking into.

"We trap and remove saltwater crocodiles, they're of the most concern.

"We're looking into how big it was (and) where it was ... we think it was a freshie but we need to confirm."

The freshwater crocodile, also known as the Australian freshwater crocodile, or colloquially as a 'freshie', is a species of reptile endemic to the northern regions of Australia.

Unlike their much larger Australian relative, the saltwater crocodile, freshwater crocodiles are not known as man-eaters and rarely cause fatalities, although they will bite in self defense if cornered.
