Drunk takes £300,000 bus for police chase joyride
A drunk man stole a £300,000 bus before taking it on a joyride in scenes that were described as being like "a Hollywood movie".
Stephen Pope stole a bus from the Wakefield bus station on 27 July, and was pursued by police as he took it on a joyride through town, reports the Yorkshire Evening Post.
He reportedly crashed into parked cars, drove in the path of oncoming vehicles, and caused £2,000 worth of damage.
Leeds Crown Court also heard he rammed a police car that pulled in front of his path in an attempt to stop him.
Pope, of Peterson Road, Eastmoor, Wakefield, pleaded guilty to two offences of aggravated vehicle taking, two of driving while disqualified, three of having no insurance, drink driving and taking a vehicle without the owner's consent.
The court also heard he had previous convictions for stealing buses.
According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, recorder Paul Isaacs jailed Pope for 98 weeks, and said: "It was like something out of a Hollywood movie. Instead of it being a tank or a ridiculous fast car, it was a bus and the chase was on."
