Melbourne named world's most liveable city - again!

Updated

Melbourne has been named the best city in the world to live in again, topping the Economist Intelligence Unit's (EIU) Global Liveability Index for the fourth year in a row.

The Australian city outperformed 139 cities in the EIU's Liveability Survey, which assesses living conditions in 140 cities across the globe by assigning a rating across five broad categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.

Melbourne's Lord Mayor, Robert Doyle, told the Herald Sun: "To be named the world's most liveable city for four consecutive years is a great honour and a testament to the enviable lifestyle that Melbourne's offers."

The accolade comes just days after Condé Nast Traveller named the Victorian capital the world's 'friendliest city'.

Melbourne is regarded as the cultural and culinary capital of Australia. The multicultural city has an elegance that speaks for itself, from its glass-roofed arcades and narrow lanes to the buzzing River Yara promenade. There are plenty of green, open spaces too, including the Royal Botanic Gardens with its displays of exotic plants.

Adelaide, Sydney and Perth were other Australian cities which made the top 10 list, while only two European cities were named the world's most liveable. There were no British cities named the best to live in.

EIU's Liveability Survey also looked at the worst places to live, with Lagos, Nigeria, Douala, Cameroon and Algiers, Algeria coming bottom of the report.
