A British woman is being tested for Ebola "as a precaution" after she collapsed and died unexpectedly following a journey from Nigeria to Austria.

The 48-year-old British national was was found dead in her home in Vomp, Austria on Saturday, reports the Daily Mail.

The unnamed woman's journey from Nigeria to Austria included a stop-over in Germany.

The doctor who attended the scene gave the cause of death as a viral infection.

Austrian officials confirmed that they sent a blodd and urine sample to the Centre for Tropical Diseases in Hamburg, Germany.

Franz Katzgraber, head of the regional health board, said the risk that the woman had died from the Ebola virus was 'extremely low.'

'We have decided to get a diagnosis for exclusion of ebola,' he said.

'The 48-year-old recently entered Germany from Nigeria and we could not determine the history of the deceased.'

The Health Ministry added that even if the woman did turn out to have died from Ebola, it was unlikely to have passed on to anyone else as the infection is only transmitted through direct contact with blood or other bodily fluids of an infected person.

The woman's home has been sealed off and emergency services and medics who attended the scene have been quarantined.

Europe has already had one confirmed Ebola victim, Spanish Missionary Priest Miguel Pajares who passed away in a Madrid hospital last week after being airlifted home, reports Breitbart.

The body of a woman who died shortly after touching down in United Arab Emirates capital Abu Dhabi yesterday is also being tested for Ebola as fears of the disease spreading beyond East Africa grow, reports the Daily Mail.

The official death toll for the disease is now well in excess of 1,000.
