A young boy was saved by lifeguards and quick-thinking members of the public after falling into the sea from rocks near Whitby Pier.

The boy was carried out to sea after falling into the water but a passer-by helped save him by throwing a life ring for the seven-year-old to hold onto while RNLI lifeguards swam out to reach him.

According to the Daily Telegraph, he was not breathing when he was brought back to the shore. A lifeguard gave him CPR and started to breathe.

He was airlifted to hospital.

Lifeguard Christine Milner told ITV News: "Thanks to the quick actions of the lifeguards and members of the public the casualty was quickly pulled from the water. It is very unusual for anyone who isn't breathing to start breathing again on their own after just one rescue breath but it's a fantastic result. We all wish him a speedy recovery."

In December, a tourist had to be rescued after accidentally walking off a pier in Melbourne while checking her Facebook page.

The woman plummeted from St Kilda's pier into Port Phillip Bay.

Police were alerted to the incident by a witness and rescued her in a speedboat after about 20 minutes.

The woman, who apologised, was taken to hospital for observation but police said she was fine.

Senior Constable Dean Kelly of the water police said officers found her floating metres from the pier.

"She was still out in the water laying on her back in a floating position because she told us later that she couldn't swim," the Australian Broadcasting Corporation quoted him as saying.

She still had her mobile phone in her hand and initially she apologised. She said: "I was checking my Facebook page on the phone and I've fallen in".

Constable Kelly called on people to pay more attention when using social media around water.
