Doncaster Sheffield Airport was closed after a plane's landing gear apparently malfunctioned on Friday night.

The airport, known as Robin Hood Airport, remained closed on Saturday morning following the incident.

Sky News reports that South Yorkshire Police believes the wheels of the plane did not come down properly as it approached the runway.

One person was taken to hospital with minor injuries, Yorkshire Ambulance Service said.

On its website, the airport said: "At approximately 19.30pm today Friday 15 August, there was an incident involving a LinksAir flight at Doncaster Sheffield Airport.

"The aircraft was returning from Belfast City Airport and suffered a problem with the undercarriage during landing.

"The aircraft remains adjacent to the runway and cannot be moved until aircraft investigators arrive on site.

"As a consequence the Airport is currently closed and is not expected to reopen until mid-morning August 16th.

"Passengers due to travel from the airport should contact their airline for the latest information regarding their flight."

The Guardian reports that the airport was expected to remain closed until mid-morning on Saturday and flights to European holiday destinations, including Ibiza, were grounded.
