Following her reconciliation with husband Michael Douglas earlier this year, Catherine Zeta-Zones has put her colonial-style country house on the market.

The 44-year-old Welsh actress had been living at the 6,600 square foot Bedford, New York mansion during the split, where she spent much of her time riding horses.

The couple rented the 1930s six-bedroom, six-bathroom house for about six months before buying it for $5.075 million in 2010. Since then, they've carried out extensive renovation work, including building a new guesthouse, creating a master suite with huge walk-in wardrobes and a dressing room and remodelling the kitchen.

Set in farmland

The house, now priced at $8.1 million with agent Zillow, boasts a gym and sauna, while outside are extensive gardens, a greenhouse, swimming pool and spa. Approached by a long, gated drive, it sits in a five-acre plot and is surrounded on three sides by a farm.

"Many movie stars remake houses to their own style and then wonder what else is out there," Sally Siano of broker Siano & Company tells news site Lohud.com. "I don't know specifically why they are moving – just happy they called us."

Zeta-Jones married 69-year-old Douglas in 2000, and the couple has two children, 14-year-old son Dylan and daughter Carys, 11. However, they embarked on a trial separation this time last year. In April, though, the couple appeared in public together once again, and Zeta-Jones moved back to their New York City apartment - which seems the most likely reason for the sale.

Desirable area

According to Siano, Zeta-Jones and Douglas are now looking at other properties in the area, which is a highly desirable one.

Other nearby residents include include Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Martha Stewart and Chevy Chase.

But the couple also has an apartment on New York's Upper West Side as well as homes in the UK and Bermuda - although this last is currently rented out for $28,000 a month.
