Yorkshire has been named Europe's Leading Destination at the World Travel Awards - for the second time in a row - beating the likes of Rome, Paris, London and Berlin to scoop the award for Europe's best holiday destination in 2014.

Yorkshire was placed firmly on the tourist map this year when it hosted the Tour de France's Grand Départ in July. Tour de France race director Christian Prudhomme even said it was the "grandest" of Grand Départs the event has seen its 111-year history.

After racers sped through the Yorkshire Dales, he told the BBC: "When you said you would deliver the grandest Grand Depart it was the truth, you have raised the bar for all future hosts of the Tour de France."

On winning the award, Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, told Incentive Travel: "This is yet more evidence that Yorkshire continues to be the premier European travel destination by winning this prestigious award. It is a tribute to the 12 months of hard work that has gone into making this year the most successful year of all time for the county."

Past winners of the prestigious award include Edinburgh, Istanbul, Lisbon and Greece. London has won the award 10 times since 1996.
