Professional shooter Rachel Carrie was left feeling "like a criminal" when a Dundeehotel refused to let her stay there with her shotgun - before calling the police.

The 30-year-old, from Leeds, was forced to spend four hours being questioned by police, despite producing a shotgun certificate and explaining she was part of Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, she said: "I got to the hotel at around 11pm ... first the staff asked me if I had brought a rifle onto the premises.

"I replied no, it is a shotgun, and tried to explain my role in the Commonwealth Games. But they said it was illegal to have a shotgun in a hotel. It is not illegal to have a shotgun in a hotel.

"They called the police and I was questioned until 2.30am. I was really embarrassed."

Rachel, who had driven to Dundee for the ladies' double trap competition at the Barry Buddon shooting centre, took to her Twitter page to vent her frustrations.

She wrote: "JUST getting to bed after a gruelling 5hr drive ended in @MalmaisonDundee refusing to let me have gun with me for the #CommonwealthGames."

She also warned other gun owners about the hotel, writing: "#RT all gun owners @MalmaisonHotels DO NOT allow shotgun athletes to stay I was told this at 11pm after 5hr drive finally got to bed at 2.30."

Other users retweeted her frustrations, and one read: "@MalmaisonHotels @MalmaisonDundee claim it's "illegal to have a shotgun in a hotel" I was made to feel like a criminal until 2.30am 😔"

The hotel's general manager Josie Simcox confirmed to the Daily Mail: "We do not allow firearms in the guest bedrooms."
